Fashion Forecast: The Biggest Trends to Expect in 2019
By Jonh C |

Trends come and go. And with 2019 close on the horizon, yesterday’s hottest item is fast becoming next season’s faux pas. But like history has proven time and time again, fashion is nothing but a cycle. Unsurprisingly, spring 2019 is already teasing us with a selection of well-loved familiar pieces, while breathing new life into timeless glamor. That said, here are some trends that are set to take over the runways next year.

Silk and Satin

These fabrics enjoyed their heyday back in the early 2000s, but garments in silk and satin seem to be making a sizable comeback. These high-quality threads are most common in luxury stores like Bloomingdale’s and Nordstrom, but more wearable options like camisoles are available from other retailers.

Tie-Dye

Designers took a surprising cue from the ’70s when they revived this staple Woodstock trend. Across the runways of Calvin Klein, Stella McCartney, and even Prada, this hippie pattern was splashed across the cropped shirts and jackets of models everywhere late this year. The trend will likely catch on and reach new heights this 2019.

Living Coral

In a recent announcement, Pantone has finally revealed Living Coral as the new Colour of the Year, officially dethroning 2018’s Ultraviolet. For the first time, color takes on a deeper meaning, as Vogue writes that the color is “evocative of how coral reefs provide shelter to a diverse kaleidoscope of color.” Beyond just a trendy shade, Living Coral is meant to spread awareness about the current conditions of our marine life, while also embodying a spirit of vibrancy and optimism. It won’t be surprising to see it flooding the racks and runways for months to come.

Vintage Florals

To be frank, floral prints never truly go away, but they have started to take on a different form as of late. Recent florals have been seeing a more mature and vintage look as if taken straight from a ’60s photograph.

Pleats

After enjoying a successful run at various seasonal runways, pleats are proving that they’re here to stay, especially throughout 2019. Fashion has always had a longstanding love affair with pleats in their many forms — from the ubiquitous 1920s flapper dress to the early 2000s schoolgirl ensemble. This time, designers are going full-on, adding more pleats and putting this once subtle detail front and center. But if you’re not ready to fully dive into this trend just yet, you can start with skirts that feature delicate, wide pleats. Pretty Me’s Zaful selection features a variety of styles patterned after this rising trend, such as a new take on your classic swing dresses. It’s a look that is both classy and timeless, sure to make you the life of every party, even for those who don’t feel like being too daring with their fashion choices.

Shorts

This entire 2018, cycling shorts pretty much stole the show. They were donned by celebrities and influencers like Kim Kardashian, which officially elevated the humble biker garment. Though it looks like they aren’t going anywhere soon, it is starting to become overshadowed by a more boyish alternative — more loose, tailored cuts that are equal parts chic and casual.

Puffy Sleeves

You may already know this trend as the popular “Instagram blouse,” but this style has a cult following for a reason. Harper’s Bazaar calls it “the perfect hybrid of the Victorian era meets the era of Dynasty,” which makes it the perfect styling choice to give any outfit a regal, elegant boost. However, puffy sleeves have started to climb the ranks of high fashion too, as seen on the runways of Christian Siriano and Delpozo.

Wearable Make-up

Thanks to beauty brands like Glossier who are embracing the “skin first” philosophy, fashion has quickly followed suit. On the runway, models have been spotted decked out in bare, flawless skin, which we previously explored here on the Fashion Edits blog. Unsurprisingly, this refreshing trend continues with designers continuing the “wearable” makeup trend at shows. Veering less on the side of theatrical, head-turning make-up, Glamour notes how we are seeing more natural looks such as brushed-out curls, just-kissed lips, and messy half-wet waves.
