All of us have a different way of celebrating the New Year. While for some of us New Year is about attending the hottest parties, for others it a chance for a new beginning. A chance to figure out a path where we can leave our bad habits and choices behind and start fresh with new ones. It could be something as simple as, drinking more water, or moving to an entirely different country. The point is to survey the past and come up with new goals for the future. You don’t have to change the world through your resolutions, just focus on yourself and see how the world around you changes. So, if you are willing to step into 2019, with a “New year, new you” mindset, then here are some resolutions that can help you achieve this change:
1-Leave the procrastination monster
Do more, procrastinate less should be your motto for 2019. Doing things half-heartedly at the last moment was a thing of the past, this New Year you need to stop procrastinating and ace whatever you set your mind to. This could be particularly hard for professional procrastinators who are content with mediocre work and see nothing wrong in replacing work with chilling. This is why you should always keep the bigger picture in mind, so your motivation doesn’t decrease over time. If that does not work, then instilling the fear of failure might prove to be a good option. The key to doing this is trying a lot of different things like applications that help you focus or people that keep reminding you to complete your work. Once you have tried all your options, only then you can discover what works for you.
Remember, your dreams don’t work unless you do.
2-Your number one priority should be you
Make it a priority to do something for yourself every single day, it can be something as little as taking a relaxing bath or something major like going to therapy. The point is to invest in your well-being, to prioritize yourself over others. This New Year, it’s time to empower yourself and watch how it does wonders for your self-esteem and mental health. Celebrate your flaws and show yourself some much-needed compassion, love yourself how you always wanted to be loved. Being happy makes you look way younger than your age! It’s important to remember that this is not a competition, your definition of self-care may be different than others and that’s okay. It’s high time that you start being as kind to yourself as you are to others because, at the end of the day, you matter more than anyone else. After all, you can only make other people happy once you are happy with yourself.
3-Make that change you always wanted to
If you’re craving a change in your physical appearance for a long time, now’s the moment to act on those impulses. This is the perfect time to experiment with your looks, see what you like and change what you don’t. Stepping into the new year with a new look can be empowering, it can also make you feel like a different person, one who does not shy away from doing things that he or she enjoys. Changing your appearance also means working out at home or going to the gym. You could dye your hair a different color, or get a new wardrobe so that your outer self matches your inner personality change. Don’t rely on fashion magazines or models for inspiration, follow what your heart desires instead of a trend that does not make you remotely happy. People will always want you to become a version of yourself that they desire but it is your right to become the best possible version of yourself in a way that you deem worthy.
4-Focus on your health
This is the year where you have to focus on being the best version of yourself, the healthier version. It’s no secret that a healthy mind requires a healthy diet, so your focus should be on healthy food choices. This means cutting back on the junk food obsession as it does more harm than good. Start off with little changes like adding a fruit smoothie to your diet or learning to cook your favorite dishes at home. The best part is that your skin, hair, body will reflect this positive change, you’ll notice a significant improvement in your skin, hair and a more fit body. Fit does not translate to thin, a fit body differs from person to person but at its core, it’s a healthy body. It doesn’t mean that you should start going on crazy diets or giving up all your favorite foods. It means that you should start treating your body like a temple.
5-Loosen the reigns on social media
Living your life through a screen, spending more time online than with people in real life are all signs that it’s time for a social media detox. If you keep comparing yourself to the models on Instagram then you’ll spend your entire life unhappy. No one’s life is as glamorous as it looks on social media, people only post their happy moments online. Not what happens behind the scenes, or the struggle that their life is. So this year, vow to live life to the fullest not just through your screen. Do something productive instead of being glued to your screen, fantasizing about how good others have it. If you are constantly living your life in a way that makes you look good on social media, then you are not really living your life.
6-Tighten up the purse strings a little
Raise your hands if you were broke most of last year and don’t want to repeat the same pattern this year. The only advice I can give you is to not be reeled in by the word “Sale”, it may seem like a bargain but it’s not cheaper than the alternative which is not buying anything at all. Buy less but smart, invest in quality, not quantity so that you can get a good life out of the products you purchase. If you’re a shopaholic, then every time you think of purchasing something, decide whether it’s worth being broke and surviving on McDonald’s for the rest of the month. Try to save money so that instead of lusting over other people’s vacations, you can actually go on one yourself. Make tradeoffs in your mind before purchasing anything. Do you want to buy multiple clothes to wear in the same city again or do you want to save money to go on a vacation instead?
The main purpose of New Year’s resolutions is to do those things that you have been meaning to do for a long time but you need a momentous occasion to make them happen and what better time is there to do them than the start of the New Year. It is your time to change your life for the better and in a way that makes you happy and content. Think of it this way, the start of the New Year is like a blank new canvas in your easel. You can do whatever you want with it.
