Choosing the Right Fragrance for You

Women testing Parfume

The psychology of fragrance is well-documented. You can go back to ancient Egypt, and the people were already experimenting with the best royal fragrance to alter their body’s natural odor. It is ingrained in our DNA to be attracted by the smell. For instance, a baby gets drawn by the scent of the mother’s breasts.

It is no wonder, therefore, that the fragrance industry in the US continues to be robust. For instance, in 2018, the sector generated about $4 billion in revenues. The market also has an estimated compound annual growth rate of 2.0% through 2023. A little modest perhaps, but generally, it is one of the industries not severely affected by fluctuations in the market.

After all, people still want to smell good whether to attract the opposite sex or gain an edge in social circles.

But how do you know that the royal fragrance is for you? Here are some tips:

Experiment. Unfortunately, there is no way to tell if the perfume is perfect for you until you have tried it. The product may smell good on your friend, but each of our skins has a different chemical composition. Your body may react to the fragrance differently.

If the fragrance lasts a long time. The perfume should last about 12 hours, at least. Although, you should shoot for 24 hours, which some fragrances are perfectly capable of, by the way. However, if the smell dissipates after a couple of hours, the royal scent may not be compatible with your skin.

Eau de toilette, eau de cologne, or Eau de parfum? They differ in the amount of concentration. For instance, the cologne only has 7% of the fragrance essence mixed in alcohol. With this, the cologne does not last long, especially in a humid environment. Eau de toilette, meanwhile, has about 10% of the fragrance essence, so it lasts longer. Both are ideal to be sprayed directly on the skin. In contrast, the parfum has a concentration of about 15%. But since it focuses more on the heart and middle notes, the product is best applied to your clothes or hair.

Take advantage of samples. If you go to retail stores, you will see some of the sample products. If they have a competent salesperson, you would be asked several questions about your favorite scent and even your lifestyle. They would then recommend a product based on your answers. If not, try to spray on the samples. However, make sure that you do not have any other scent with you. You apply the fragrance on your pulse, behind your ear, neck, chest, inner elbow, clothes, and hair. Wear the perfume for a few hours and come back to the store and repeat the process.

Finding the right perfume for you is a bit like finding your soulmate. You know in your heart that it is the one. Of course, other people will notice this, too. You will get more compliments about how good you smell.
