Tips for choosing a hair-stylist

If you need to make improvements in your hair, you should know your options for stylists. Here are questions to ask before choosing a hair stylist.

Are you on the hunt for a new hairstylist, but aren’t sure who to choose?

Finding a good hairstylist can actually be incredibly difficult. You don’t want to  hop around from stylist to stylist before you find the perfect one, as this is a waste of  money (and you’re risking a potentially bad haircut!)

So, what should you do to find the perfect hairstylist? In order to find the right stylist, you need to ask the right questions.

Check out this guide to discover the top questions to ask before choosing a hairstylist.

1. Do you Have a Cosmetology License?

The first question you want to ask a hairstylist is whether or not they have a cosmetology license.

One of the biggest benefits of a cosmetology license is that it teaches stylists the proper techniques for all kinds of different haircuts. If a stylist has a cosmetology license, it demonstrates their professional commitment to their work.

Additionally, many places require legally require stylists to be licensed in order to provide services. In addition to asking if a stylist is certified,  it’s also a  good idea to ask them where they went to school.

Different programs have different reputations, and it’s important to find a stylist who graduated from a reputable school.

2. What’s Your Experience?

In addition to asking about their experience, it’s also important that you ask about their credentials.

Ideally, you want to find a  stylist who has at least a few years of experience under their belt. You should also ask if he or she is a colorist or curly hair specialist,  as this requires additional training.

You should also ask the stylist if they participate in continuing education programs to stay on top of the latest techniques and trends

3. What Do You Charge?

Typically, hairstylists list their prices on their website,  but if they don’t, don’t be afraid to call up and ask.

You shouldn’t base everything on price though, as it’s important to keep in mind that stylists with more training and experience will charge more than a newly licensed stylist.

There are actually three stylist levels:  junior, senior, and master. Typically, a master stylist is going to charge 15 to 20 percent more than a junior stylist.

It’s also important to keep in mind that many salons offer deals to new customers. It never hurts to ask for a discount, especially if you’re considering buying multiple services.

4. May I See Your Portfolio?

It’s hard to get an idea of how good of a job a stylist will do without actually getting a haircut.

The best way to determine a stylist’s skill level and style is to look at their portfolio. Oftentimes, a stylist’s portfolio can be found on their website or Facebook page.

When looking at their portfolio, you want to look for pictures that match up with your hair color, length, and texture. If everyone in the hairstylist’s book has thin, blonde hair and you have thicky, curly hair, then they may not be the right match for you.

Additionally, if you’re thinking of doing something special with your hair, like dying it or getting a blowout, then you want to make sure they have pictures of these services as well.

5. What Services Do You Offer?

It’s also important to ask stylists about the services that they offer.

In addition to offering basic cuts and styles, many salons offer special services like blowouts, perms, coloring, and more. If you’re getting your hair styled or cut for a special event, like your wedding or prom, then you should also ask if the salon offers makeup and nails.

Or, if you’re looking to treat yourself to a full spa day, then you should also ask if the salon offers massages or other relaxing treatments.

6. What Style Do You Recommend for Me?

Good hairstylists know how to give a good haircut. Great hairstylists know how to transform your hair into a new and exciting look.

A good way to gauge if you have a great hairstylist on your hands is to ask them what they recommend for your specific hair.  A great hairstylist will have an idea of what to do with your hair based on your face shape, hair type,  and hair texture.

If you’ve always thought about trying bangs but weren’t quite sure, a great hairstylist will be able to figure out if you can pull them off just by looking at you. They’ll also be able to figure out the length and style of bangs that are best for your face.

7. What’s Your Salon Like?

The best way to figure out the vibe of a salon is to visit it in person.

When visiting a salon, the first thing you want to make note of is the cleanliness level. Do you notice stylists disinfecting their products? Is the floor being swept continuously, or is it littered with hair?

Also, what’s the atmosphere like? Is it lively and chatty?  Or is it more peaceful and quiet? Are stylists chatting with their customers, or leaving them to relax?

Figuring out the vibe of the salon ahead of time will help you determine if it’s the right fit for you.

8. Do you Have References?

Last but not least, don’t forget to ask the hairstylist for references.

Obviously, a stylist is only going to put you in contact with their most satisfied clients. This is why we also recommend checking their website testimonials as well as their reviews on Google My Business
