Are Denim Jackets Work Appropriate?
By MichelleW |

Denim jackets are comfortable, versatile, and one of the American classics. While this casual outerwear is a wardrobe staple and an easy way to add layers to an outfit, the concern is whether or not they’re appropriate for work. Well, the short answer is… it depends.

Some office environments and shared workspaces, such as salons, will have a casual or business casual dress code. Others, like law offices, may require more formal attire. Let’s explore the opportunities for wearing a denim jacket within each dress code to determine if you have a clear go-ahead within your workspace.

Casual Dress Code: Green Light

If you’re working at home or in a more creative and casual field, fashionable blazers and denim jackets for women are likely a common sight within your workplace. However, it’s still important to present yourself in a professional manner.

There isn’t necessarily a style of denim jacket that is off-limits, but make sure that the jacket doesn’t have distracting rips, logos, or patterns that would make someone else in the office raise an eyebrow. As long as you’re keeping your denim jacket style simple, you’ve got the green light. Just add some earrings or a scarf to pull everything together, and you’re ready to take on the day.

Business Casual Dress: Green Light (Sometimes Yellow)

There’s nothing risque or explicitly controversial about a denim jacket, which lends itself well to most business casual dress codes. Popular amongst educators looking to add layers or retail associates wanting to add comfort to their ensemble, denim jackets are a great way to stylize a business casual outfit. Consider adding a dark-wash denim jacket to a sleeveless blouse or dress. This creates a more laid-back vibe, while still allowing you to look like a total boss.

That being said, you might want to pump on the breaks if you’re expecting a visit from stakeholders or supervisors. For more official meetings and networking opportunities, it’s a good idea to opt for something a bit more formal than a denim jacket pairing.

Formal Dress Code: Red Light

There are certain career paths that will always lean toward a formal dress code. Corporate, real estate, and government office positions scrape the surface of some of the work environments that typically require an upscaled fashion sense and formal dress code. Denim jackets will rarely be an acceptable option within these spaces.

Business-focused power clothes, on the other hand, communicate a culture of professionalism. For example, a tailored blazer or chic trench coat will give you a massive confidence boost and help others take you seriously.

In Conclusion: It Depends

A tailored denim jacket can be just the touch of class that an outfit needs to look more put together, or it could be a casual statement piece within an otherwise formal look. In terms of addressing their acceptability within a work environment, however, it comes down to the dress code and how the denim jacket is styled. When in doubt, check with your supervisor before donning this laid-back piece to avoid a fashion faux pas.
