“Join One Warm Coat’s Efforts to Reduce Waste and Help Those in Need”
November 15th is National Recycling Day. It is a reminder that waste management is an important issue. Did you know that nearly 60% of all clothing, or 3 in 5 garments, end up in landfills or incinerated annually? Coats, jeans, and dresses take the most carbon to produce, but if each item of clothing were worn twice as many times, greenhouse gas emissions would be 44 percent lower. In honor of National Recycling Day, One Warm Coat’s Coat Drive Program encourages people to give their gently worn coats a second life. Since 1992, One Warm Coat’s Coat Drive Program has kept more than 19 million pounds of textiles out of landfills. Here are some tips for giving your coat a second life:
1. Search your zip code on One Warm Coat’s nationwide map to find a coat drive in your community. If you have a coat that is clean and wearable (no holes or stains), donate it to the coat drive.
2. Organize a coat drive in your community and encourage your family, friends, and co-workers to gather their gently worn coats. One Warm Coat provides an easy 3-step program to help people of all ages host a successful coat drive.
3. If you find coats that cannot be worn any longer, Retold Recycling can help you. Request a bag from their website for the easiest and most convenient way to keep your clothes out of landfills. Fill their bag with your textile recycling and drop it off at the Post Office.
Remember, small actions can make a significant impact. The CEO of One Warm Coat, Beth Amodio, urges everyone to participate in a coat drive this National Recycling Day.
