Plus Size Fashion Tips: How to Dress for Your Body Type
Plus Size Fashion Tips

For many women, there’s a deep-seated belief that you can’t look glamourous and beautiful unless you’re rocking a small frame. Thanks to the continuing movement and education on body positivity, more women are embracing their curves and dressing accordingly. If you’re not sure how to dress your plus-size body type, consider the following tips.

1. Monochromatic Looks

Many people love wearing black from head to toe because it tends to look clean and chic. However, you can also wear other colors from head to toe and look chic. Plus, monochromatic looks tend to be pretty slimming. You can choose colors like navy blue, camel, and emerald green to create a stunning look. Even if you choose to incorporate colors like pink, it’s okay to pair a magenta pair of slacks with a bubble-gum pink button-down blouse. Two shades of the same color, when prepared correctly, can look incredible. Just know that when you’re plus-sized, the brighter you go, the bigger you’ll look. Though colors like white and yellow are stunning, they’re not the most slimming. However, when worn in the right way, they can be incredibly captivating.

2. Tailoring

You might have the best-looking outfit, but if it’s not tailored correctly, it’ll look terrible. Tailoring is an inexpensive way to make a simple garment look as though it was made for your body. Just by raising the hem on a pair of jeans, it’ll be easier to create an effortless look. You don’t even have to get rid of all of the clothes in your closet as you do an overhaul. Some of your clothes might need tailoring to take them to the next level.

3. Supportive Undergarments

Oftentimes, women make the mistake of ignoring the need for supportive undergarments because they simply think that no one can see them. Since they can’t see them, they don’t matter. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Your undergarments serve as your foundation. Head to a local lingerie shop that caters to women of all sizes. Once you’re able to get measured, invest in undergarments that can comfortably lift and smooth any areas underneath your clothing.

4. Structure

When an outfit looks structured, it looks more polished and stylish. Do your best to gravitate towards garments that have built-in structure. This applies to a structured blazer that you can wear with a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. This even applies to blouses. Peplum blouses tend to have a structural quality to them. They provide a waistline for those who want more. It also enhances the look for curves. Even if you’re looking for a winter coat or skirt, look for items that have clean and defined lines. When clothes look like they’re draping over the body, this tends to look unkempt and disheveled.

5. Appropriate Patterns & Prints

If you don’t want to look wide, avoid horizontal stripes. If you love stripes, focus on vertical stripes that are skinny. When you’re in love with prints, know that you don’t have to toss them out. Just focus on finding plus size women’s clothing that features smaller prints. When the prints are bold and large, they make a statement before you do. In fact, those larger prints will make the outfit look less cohesive. Instead, small, subtle prints and patterns can complement each other for a great outfit on a larger frame.

6. Shoes and Accessories

Don’t purchase shoes with ankle straps. Ankle straps tend to be tricky. However, they often look uncomfortable and restricting. When you’re picking out purses and accessories, try to pick items that aren’t too small or adolescent. If you’re looking for age-appropriate sophistication on a plus-size woman, avoid small bows or frilly details that look childish. When done correctly, a small hairpin or brooch with a feminine detail can look good. Just be mindful of the size of the accessory as it can stand out like a sore thumb when you don’t want it to.

Look through your closet and take note of the outfits you normally gravitate towards. Consider why you do this. If the common denominator is comfort, focus on shopping for outfits that are both comfortable and stylish. Comfort and frumpy don’t have to be synonymous with one another. As you adopt these tips with your wardrobe, you’ll be able to confidently and beautifully rock anything in your closet.
