This study analyzed environmental factors for 80 cities worldwide
- Phoenix is the best city in the world for skin health, with an ideal average yearly temperature of 72°F and the lowest observed traffic congestion, reducing the effects of stress on dermatological health.
- Los Angeles is among the worst 5 cities for days of sunlight and the worst 20 cities for traffic congestion.
- Both New York and Washington are in the top 10 best cities for air pollution, with low concentrations of skin-damaging particulate matter in the air.
Berlin, — 02.04.2020 — – Chemberry, the search engine for personal and home care ingredients that connects buyers and specialty chemical suppliers, has released a comprehensive study that evaluates the impact of nine environmental and lifestyle factors in metropolitan areas on dermatological health and ranks the best and worst cities for your skin.
The study aims to reveal which cities are the best and worst for your skin, by analyzing the 80 cities with the highest population in the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) nations and in the most populous countries in the world. The factors that were included relate to air, sun and stress conditions that impact dermatological health, such as average yearly temperature, number of days of sunlight per year, average yearly UV radiation, humidity, air pollution over a year, average yearly wind speed, average daily cigarette consumption per smoker, traffic congestion and average weekly working hours per person.
Phoenix is the best city in the world for skin health, with high scores in factors related to air conditions, especially in terms of average yearly humidity. The state capital of Arizona also has the ideal temperature for skin health of 72°F, along with the lowest traffic congestion, achieving the highest score in that category. Phoenix is followed by Washington DC, which ranks 13th in the world for the high scores the capital obtained for its low levels of air pollution. Los Angeles is the worst ranking American city in the study due to the extremely high number of days of sunlight that is correlated to a greater risk of contracting skin diseases. While the Canadian cities of Montreal and Vancouver are in the top 5, the European cities of Oslo, Munich, Stockholm, and Madrid also rank high and are among the best cities for skin health. At the other end of the list, Mumbai is the worst city for skin health, especially for the high levels of stress correlated to traffic congestion, low air quality and high humidity that decrease skin barrier function and lead to the outbreak of skin diseases, such as acne.
The following tables reveal the ranking of the best and worst cities for skin health.
Table 1: Results of the cities in the USA
Further findings:
- Brisbane, Phoenix, and Guangzhou score the highest in terms of average temperature, with the ideal temperature for skin health being 72°F.
- For average UV radiation per year, the Nordic cities of Reykjavik, Helsinki, Oslo, and Stockholm are the best four cities in the world, since they present the lowest registered UV indexes.
- Belfast ranks first for the days of sunlight per year, with fewer days of sunshine being better for skin health due to the correlation between sun exposure and skin diseases.
- Edinburgh ranks first for air pollution with the lowest concentration of particulate matter (PM), since PM exposure exerts negative effects on human skin.
- Montreal is the best city in the world in terms of wind speed with the lowest registered value, meaning that the wind does not draw crucial levels of moisture out of the epidermis.
- Phoenix, Delhi, and Istanbul have the perfect level of humidity, measured as the percentage of water vapor in the atmosphere, ranging between 30-50%, and were therefore rewarded with the highest score.
- Panama City, Lima, and Singapore have the worst levels of humidity that lead to an increase in skin sensitivity and acne flares, and were therefore rewarded with the lowest score.
- Phoenix and Montreal rank the highest for Air, with both cities having optimal air conditions for dermatological health.
- For daily cigarette consumption per smoker, which is correlated to acne and stress levels that negatively affect skin health, Valletta ranks first with the highest number of cigarettes smoked per day, closely followed by Riyadh and Taipei.
- For traffic congestion, Phoenix is the best city overall, with the lowest extra travel time during rush hour experienced by drivers across the year, reducing the impact of stress on skin health.
- Germany is the best country in the world for average weekly working hours per capita with the shortest hours, minimizing the effects of work-related stress on the skin.
