“Join the Movement: Donate a Coat on MLK DAY
On Monday, January 15th, Americans actively observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a national holiday that honors the civil rights leader’s teachings. People are encouraged to serve their communities on MLK day. One popular way to serve others today is by partnering with a nonprofit organization called One Warm Coat. This organization distributes free coats to those in need. At the same time, they are promoting volunteerism and environmental sustainability. Participating in this initiative can significantly impact the lives of needy children and adults in our communities.
Martin Luther King Jr. was a great leader. He said: “Life’s most urgent question is: What are you doing for others?” Americans celebrate MLK Day as a day of service, giving back, and participating in community activities. The day is dedicated to promoting King’s message of service to others, equality, and justice.
One way of giving back is partnering with One Warm Coat. A national nonprofit organization that provides free coats to needy children and adults while promoting volunteerism and environmental sustainability.
Since 1992, One Warm Coat has facilitated 50,000 coat drives nationwide, collecting 8 million coats distributed through more than 1,500 nonprofit partners and keeping more than 19 million pounds of textiles out of landfills.
Warm Coat commits to sharing warmth one at a time and believes everyone has the right to shelter from the elements without discrimination.
Beth Amodio, the President and CEO of One Warm Coat, tells us. One way to serve others on this national holiday is to team up with One Warm Coat to share warmth with needy people.
It is important to note that the need for warmth is more significant as we head into the coldest months of the year. Beth Amodio reminds us that approximately 37 million Americans live in poverty, or 11% of the population. While it’s true that many individuals struggle to afford basic needs such as food and shelter due to the high costs of fuel, groceries, insurance, and rent, a straightforward solution can make a significant difference: a warm coat.
Individuals and organizations can get involved in three ways:
1. Donate coats
Visit One Warm Coat’s map of coat drives to search by zip code for a place to drop off gently worn outerwear.
2. Making a financial donation
To help warm someone in need. Each dollar donated will provide warmth to one person. You can make a gift by clicking on this link.
3. Consider organizing a coat drive by registering for this initiative.
This activity suits people of all ages and can be completed in just one day. You can collect gently used warm coats and jackets for individuals and families who may not have the means to purchase them. Spread the word and set up collection stations to encourage donations from friends, family, and neighbors. You can help keep others warm and positively impact your community.

For instance, when a local Girl Scout troop borrowed a church parking lot, community members drove through it and handed their coat donations to the Scouts. At the end of the drive, the troop had collected almost 400 coats for a local nonprofit! It requires a time, place, and a way to communicate your drive. You can do this through social media, signs, email, or local news. Visit One Warm Coat’s website for more information on how to hold a successful drive!
It’s a great way of showing care. It is by leaving a kind message in each coat pocket donated. Donate the coats to a nonprofit. The recipient will find the note and feel warmth in their heart.
Join us today in sharing warmth and kindness one coat at a time!
